Two Paths to Residency: Remote vs. Local Employment
In 2026, the Albanian government uses a "Unique Permit," but the hoops you jump through depend entirely on who is signing your paycheck.
Path A: The Digital Nomad (Remote Worker)
This is for you if your company is outside of Albania. You are essentially a guest who brings foreign currency into the local economy.

Income Requirement: ~$1,200 USD/month.

Banking: You have more flexibility (though it's still a struggle). Union Bank or Raiffeisen are your best bets for opening an account before your residency card arrives.
Path B: Local Employment (Working for an Albanian Company)
This is the route I took. If you are hired by a local school, office, or business, the process shifts significantly because your employer is now your "sponsor."

The Banking "Lock-In": This is a huge one. Unlike nomads, you don't really get a choice in banks. You must open an account at the exact same bank your employer uses. This is how they process payroll and tax contributions.

The Catch: Some banks (like Credins) can be incredibly difficult. They may refuse to even look at your documents until you have your physical residency card in hand—which creates a stressful waiting game.

The Notary Rule: Even with a local job, the Notary Rule still applies to your housing. You and your landlord must go to the notary together to sign the lease. An agency contract is not enough for the Migration Office.

My "Inside" Advice:
If you are coming for a local job, ask your employer on day one which bank they use. Don't waste time trying to open an account elsewhere; go straight to their branch and be prepared for some bureaucracy.
